A Brief Chat With The One And Only..... Ken Dahl

When you think about a Ken Dahl, what comes to mind? "Flawless", sexy, hot, beautiful, fabulous etc. Well that's everything, that my Ken Dahl is. But not only is he all those things, he's also a sweet, inspirational, down to earth guy. Someone who has became a really great buddy of mines throughout the years. His music is so great! I mean, I've actually worked out to these songs at the gym, and most of them are responsible for these legs I have, I'm telling you lol..  I love him for what he does. In this brief chat, we talk about his new look, weight loss, new photos, Shaquannamenesha (lol), music, videos, The Nicki & Kim beef, albums dropping this year, his dTk photography shoot with me, a possibility of us doing some work together, and our favorite girl Brandy.  So kick back, and get to know a few things about our favorite Dahl, Ken Dahl!

Speaking of working hard. I see you've been killing it in these recent photo shoots you have been posting.
So what's up with that? Can we add model to your list of many talents?


Ken Dahl
Awwww, thank you! I've really been getting more comfortable in front of the camera. It's getting much more fun now.

I know the feeling. LOL


So the photographer you been working with is Shikeith Cathey right? I absolutely love his work. You guys work really well together. He inspires me with my photography.


And I cant help but to mention how great your looking. You have lost alot of weight. I know you shared a bit of this the last time we spoke, but what is your daily routine? And how much have you lost since you started your new diet?


Ken Dahl
Yes, Shikeith is amazing. And thank you, babe! :) I really don't look at it as a diet, its more of things I changed, I stay away from certain things like red meat, breads, etc. But I never completely get rid of it, there are times when I crave things and I certainly allow myself to have them!


It really is all about moderation and just using common sense. And keeping your scale handy. A lot of people fear the weight scale but its one of your biggest weapons in weight loss. You can't manage what you don't know.


Deonte Keller
I feel you buddy. Well when we meet we are going to eat up a house so get prepared lol.... I'm not one of those hungry looking brothers you feel me? LOL... just kidding.... but you look great Ken. I'm just totally proud of you, and your consistent growth. (BTW) Your haircut is HOT!!!


So like when are we going to shoot sir? I need to add you to my photography portfolio asap! LOL... I know we keep planning it, but let's make it a goal for 2011, OK?

Awww thank you so much! I love my new haircut. And of course we're going to shoot. Things have been crazy hectic but I want my DtK shoot! I say we set an official date for this summer.

So let's talk about "Shaquannamenesha." LOL


How did this character come about?


Ken Dahl
Shaquannamenesha! LOL Oh how I love her. She's kind of like my inner ghetto girl. I love to joke around and she allows an outlet for me to really go in with it. You're the first I'm telling this but she'll be in the Fuck Dat N*gga video, played by myself of course. She's also opening her own YouTube channel and message board soon.


Deonte Keller
O really!! Now you know "Fuck Dat N***a" is my favorite song off that CD boy! Lol...

Yes! I know you love that track to bits! I can't wait til you see the finished product babe!

Ok buddy. So when can your Dahl's expect another hot album from you? Are you in the studio putting together new music?


Ken Dahl
Right now the main focus is promoting what I already have, I have so much music that I've recorded over these past two years that I haven't really PUSHED, yet. So that's the main focus now. But music is just in me, it's not a day that goes by that I don't sing a bit, or listen to music, or think about it. So I'll be writing here and there to keep my pen strong and my creative juices flowing!

O OK cool. You know I love your music, so I'm always waiting for you to drop something new lol. I wait for you to drop stuff like I do for our girl Brandy lol.


So let me ask you this Ken. What inspires you? I mean it must feel great to have people love you music as much as I do. I've known you for a while now, and your just so humble. I truly appreciate you taking the time out to do these brief chats with me. It allows people to get a glimpse of the real you, and lets them know you are actually a cool dude. I know you inspire me. On so many levels buddy.

Awww thank you babe! It always feels amazing to connect and talk with the dahls, this is why I do this, its what gives my life purpose. I take that seriously. I just love to please, and impress. I always want to put forth stuff that I believe ties into my ultimate vision. So much work needs to be done and so much further to go, but people like you are why I'm doing this. The dahls are my heart, and my everything. I am here to serve.

I remember you telling me about creating own label once. How is that going? Are you going to be looking for new talent to develop?


Ken Dahl
That is definitely still in my plans, more of a long-term plan as of now. Right now the main focus is promoting Ken Dahl and getting the material out there. I know a very talented, charismatic person who just happens to be my nephew. I will be working with him, developing him and walking with him until I feel he's ready to be forth.


Deonte Keller

Yes, definitely, I want to do at least two this summer. Of course one being with you! Very excited. And speaking of photography, your work is awesome. I just love how personal the photos feel.

Awww thanks Ken. We are definitely going to do this shoot as we mentioned earlier. I like to get up and personal with my models, only because most of them are not "real" models. But I know for a fact I can make anyone hot! So we are going to have a killer shoot, I promise you that!

The Nicki/Kim beef, I mean honestly I wish Kim would have just never said anything to Nicki. Let me put it this way. If 15 years from now, I'm older and settled down, and a newcomer pops up with a style and look identical to mine, I'm going to take it as a compliment. Not a challenge. And embrace them.

I totally agree with you man.... 100%!!!!! At the end of the day I feel Kim should know better, especially after all she has witness with beefs back in the 90's with her mentor B.I.G. and Tupac.


So with alot of albums dropping this year. Who's CD are you anticipating the most?


Also you know, that this year Beyonce`, Lady GaGa, and Britney are all droppin' albums this year. Who do you think will dominate the charts out of the 3?

Of course you know I'm looking forward to Brandy's the most! :) And out of the three I think Britney will dominate. But Lady Gaga is definitely going to give her a run for her coins!

LMAO!!!!! I knew you were going to mention our girl Brandy!!!!!! I'm so excited boy!!!! LOL... she has been doing alot lately. Did you watch her on Dancing with the stars? She was amazing!!! I thought she should have won. And I'm not just saying that because I love her to death. LOL


I feel you on that. Lady Gaga sure will lol.

I caught her on DWTS, and I was so impressed, she really did her thing. But you know how it is sometimes, those who deserve the gold don't get it because of politics and other issues behind the scenes. But she was amazing. So proud of her.

Ken Dahl.

My buddy Ken Dahl is back with his 3rd album simply titled "Ken Dahl." He first brought us "Tricks Of The Trade" (a classic debut album) then the diverse sophomore album "THE ADAHLCALYPSE." On "Ken Dah" Ken, of course gives us those classic club banners (my favorite type of songs by him), but he also gives us a little bit more. Some of the songs definitely takes me back to the classics from "Tricks Of The Trade." Songs like "2 My Face" &"Ching Ching" just goes hard, and I love it. You can tell this is a New York boy, who truly loves & represents where he's from. That "Turnin Owt Brooklyn Into" tells it all. "Fuck Dat N****" is my favorite song off the album. The beat is hot, and I can do a mean walk to this one lmao lol.... Ken even gives us some pop on this album with songs like "Abracadabra" "Undercover" & "Ice Cream." The two songs I'm the most impressed with is "Identical Twin" (I just get into this song, and I feel this is totally different for Ken. He flexes his vocal ability here, and it's just a beautiful song.) The other song is "Closet" (the meaning behind this song just really touches me). "Lucifer" is just the shhhhh to me. "I'm taking off my halo, and trashing it" YES!!!! LOL. I think Ken Dahl has really put together another great album with producers Garlic Bread Thompson and Matthew Kurz. I'm so proud of him. Hey Guys, check out my brief chat with my buddy Ken Dahl. As most of you may know by now, I'm truly a huge fan of his work. Over the years we've become really cool, and I love to share with others how talented this young man is. Here he talks about his Hot New photo shoot, weight loss, new song "Lucifer", Brandy, and a possible future collaboration on a song & photo shoot with ME!

So let me just get straight to it about this photo shoot boy! LOL..... I'm loving it!


Who did you shoot this with, and where was it? What actually inspired it?

Ken Dahl 

Thank you baby. It was shot by Shikieth Cathey, he's an amazing photographer who happens to be a good bud of mine! The shoot was inspired by my new song "Lucifer".

Deonte Keller 

Well he did a amazing job man. I love it!


How did you keep it together on that set with that naked man walking around boy whew? LOL..... because I don't think I would have been able to focus. Hahahaha

Ken Dahl 

The model, Reggie Resino. Phew. He has the best body I've ever seen. You'll see more of him in the upcoming pics from the photoshoot that are being developed now. It was tough I will admit, but I had to get fully into professional mode and stay there. So I got thru it!

Deonte Keller 

LOL... I see. And you were posing too boy! I was like you better work it Ken Dahl. LOL..... You look amazing. I can't help but notice you've lost some weight. Can we talk about that a little? What did you do? And how much have you lost so far?

Ken Dahl

Thank you baby. And yes, I have lost weight. To date I've lost 70 lbs all together. Its something I started a while back. I wanted to make sure that I was putting forth the best possible "me" that I can. That's always been my goal with my music, but I wanted to expand beyond that and develop the entire package.


First and foremost I wanted to make sure what I was doing was healthy. I wanted it to be fast and effective as possible, but also wanted it to be something I could maintain, not a starvation diet. So I simply cut down what I was eating, watched what I was eating, and got out and did more exercise.


Now for me, fun exercise isn't hitting the gym. It bores me and I get tired of it. So I found stuff that I liked to do, like walking around my neighborhood in the evening, or dancing. I feel that the only thing that matters is that you're doing something. Anything is better than sitting on the couch.


I cut down on processed foods as well, ate oatmeal, fruit, veggies, watched my bread intake, but I didn't let go of my occasional treats. Such as a piece of candy here and there, or chinese food on the weekend. But even when I treated myself, I made sure I didn't overdo it. That's the key.

Let's talk about "Lucifer." This is a really hot track. I really like it. What inspired this song? Who produced & wrote it?

Ken Dahl 

Thank you! :) The track is produced by MJK and it was written by me. It's based on past experiences I've had with love. Sometimes you get tired of being nice. When someone is treating you wrong. And then you get a little Lucifer on a mutherfucka. LOL

LMAO.... you don't have to tell me sir. Trust me I know and been there lol...


So is this a 1st single from a new album or what?

Ken Dahl 

I don't want to say I'm working on a new album, but I am definitely recording and releasing new music. I have a lot to say and express and want everyone to hear it. I don't want things to be too formal this time as far as format is concerned. Because then things become more of a obligation than a creation.

Deonte Keller 

I feel you. Because I'm still rocking that "Turnin Owt Brooklyn" boy! That song was on my top 5 favorite list for weeks lol. At the gym I would listen to this song at least 10 times before I went to the next lol. When I did my blog banner photo for June over at deontek.blogspot.com, that song inspired my pose, and look. This song, and Usher's "Lil' Freak" lol.


So do you plan on collaborating with anyone or any other artist anytime soon?

Ken Dahl 

Thank you! And your June shoot is smoking hot! You look very sexy. As far as collaborations, I'm always open to them, but have none planned with any other artists right now. Can't wait until me and you get up and do a little recording together though! It's gonna be so fun.

Deonte Keller 

Thanks man. I truly appreciate that. Because I don't consider myself a model, but I get out there and do something, and it comes out right lol....

I'm such a fan of your photography, it's so sexy to me. We should hook up this Fall or Winter definitely. I want you to shoot me in the snow for some reason. That would be so hot. Yes people see my "fabulous" side in this recent photoshoot, but I think you can capture the other side of me a lot of people don't think I have. I'm a very playful loveable goofy person.

Deonte Keller 

Yes I would love to do that buddy. I'm telling you I'm there. You just make the call babe lol... and thanks again. I'm still learning alot when it comes to photography, but people have been very supportive, and I'm so grateful.


A lot of people may not know this, but we both love us some Brandy lol... Do you think she will come back out with a album soon? I sure hope so, and what did you think about her last album "Human"?

Ken Dahl 

Yes, I am a huge Brandy fan. Her voice is untouchable and has been giving me chills for over a decade. I know she's been in the studio recording, which means an album will come soon. I'm very excited, she never fails to inject my musical vein with inspiration. As far as "Human", it was a great inspirational album, musically she has better albums, but lyrically speaking it was her best album ever.

OMG I couldn't agree with you more sir! You just felt her on that album!


So I know you have 2 albums out already "Tricks Of The Trade" & "ADAHLCALYPSE".... since they both been out for a minute now, which one have you had the greater response from?

Ken Dahl 

Definitely "Tricks of the Trade". I am very proud of "The Adahlcalypse" but I think it was more of transition material. I really wanted to try something new, and I did, but I don't think it was too personalized. "Lucifer" is like mesh up of the spirit of the these two albums. I'm still trying new things, but remaining true to who I am, and my personality, and everything that makes me different. I'm a kick ass guy.

Yes you are homie yes you are lol..... both albums are wonderful. And I liked the fact you did something different on ""The Adahlcalypse" To me it showed me that you weren't scared to take risk, and I think it worked for you. I loved it!

Q & A With Deonte` K: Feat. Ken Dahl

I remember this night like it was yesterday. Sometime back in 2008, I came home, opened up my Myspace page and I received a friend request from someone named Ken Doll (before Ken Dahl it was Ken Doll) and I was like, now who the hell is this? LOL. I accepted the request, and then learned it was a someone promoting their music, and so on. In my head, I was thinking, here we go, another Myspace music Artist trying to push his music off on folks, and you will never hear from them again! So some time went pass, and we said a few words like thanks for the request/add, and so on. After that I never had a desire or thought to really listen to his music on his Myspace page. I always felt, if it wasn't a major artist, then most likely I won't like it. Well that all changed for me one night. I was so bored one late night, thinking about some things, and I saw this Ken Doll's picture on my page again, and I notice he mention something about loving Brandy (my all time favorite singer). So I decided to visit his page, and view his info, and learned he loved Brandy just as much as me! But while doing that, music started to play, and it said "Where you get your hair done, where you get them shoes from, it's all I hear throughout the f*cking day, b*tches pledge allegiance when they see me, wishing that they could be me, Ms. Jay taught me how to walk the runway, 1, 2, bitch walk............ B*tch I'm Flawless Yeah." When I heard "Flawless" I instantly became a fan (well a Dahl as Ken Dahl call us ) So I let the play list continue, and every song was HOT! "If This Pussy Could Talk" blew my mind. I've never heard nothing like that in my life lol. They made me dance in the dark right at my computer lol. I was so impressed with his music, that I wanted to help promote it. So I started something called who is "Ken Dahl?" on my blog, and got a lot of my viewers acquainted with him. Everything after that is history. I absolutely adore Ken Dahl. He is a such a inspiration to so many people. He's humble, and has a great spirit about him.

I wanted to tell this brief story about our connection only to say never judge a book by it's cover. I could have easily hit ignore to his friend request, or never gave his music a chance, only because of past encounters with others. But because I did, I had some of the best workouts in my life lol.. but seriously, I've got a chance to get to know a wonderful person. Someone who the rest of the world needs to get to know as well. I'm sure you will be in love with him as much as I am . So with all that being said, I present to you all, the 1st Q & A with Deonte` K featuring my buddy, and Friend Ken Dahl.

Q What’s up Ken Dahl? 1st, I would like to just thank you for taking out the time to do this Q & A with me. We’ve been planning it for a minute now.

A Of course, baby. Anything for my Deonte.

Q So let’s start off, by telling everyone who you are, and where are you from?

A My name is Ken Dahl! I'm from NYC.

Q What inspired you to do music?

A Music inspired me to do music. Amazing artistry from Brandy, Toni Braxton, and others, made me decide to do this.

Q If you could work with any other artist, who would it be, and why?

A Brandy or Toni Braxton. Lifelong dream. It's gonna happen.

Q Do you write your own songs?

A I wrote most of them. I wrote half of Tricks of The Trade and nearly every song on The Adahlcalypse (except two). I'm very involved.

Q What is a day in the studio like for you?

A It's very relaxing, its therapeutic. I release all my tension and let loose. I always feel like I am in my zone when I'm recording. I get to show who I am thru music. All my moods, all my sayings I use everyday, on a beat. It's amazing and fun.

Q How did you come up with the name Ken Dalh? We know it used to be Ken Doll. What happened? Why did you change it?

A In the spring of 2008, I was so bored at the job that I grabbed a pen and paper. I just started scribbling, and I kept writing "Ken Doll" over and over. I took that and developed a character in my head. The next day I hit up Garlic Bread with my idea, from there it was history! Once I saw the music spreading, which we really didn't expect, I changed it from "Doll" to "Dahl" to avoid any legal problems. But it ended up being an even better name, and I think it gave me my own identity.

Q I’m a photographer, and would love to do a photo shoot with you. If I wanted to shoot you and 3 of your favorite “Dahl’s” who would they be? I know you have many, but I want you to pick 3, you would love to shoot with.

A Oh my God. I think I know the answer to this though. It would be you, Danyelle, and Last O. You three hold a very special in my heart.

Q Which one of your songs do you think has had the most impact on people?

A I would have to say "If This Pussy Could Talk". It's everywhere on YouTube.

Q Do you see yourself as an inspiration for other up and coming gay singers/artist & performers?

A I never saw myself as that until people started saying it. I mean just last week someone texted me, thanking me for being a "pioneer". When I hear words like this, don't get me wrong I'm grateful, but I guess I don't see myself that way. I'm just doing what I love. But I'm glad it is inspiring, that's amazing. It gives me even more reason to continue. It gives me a great deal of purpose.

Q Lets talk about your video "EXPOSURE." What inspired this video? Where was it recorded, and what was the whole concept based on? How has the response been so far?

A In the "Exposure" video, I decided to touch on domestic violence. Listening to the song, one can assume many meanings, it's not a very elaborate song. But that's what I took from it. It was recorded here in NYC. The response has been amazing. I was nervous because this is my first video, but people are feeling it alot. Since posting it last week, it's hit 2100+ views, and alot of awesome reviews. Its brung me alot of new dahls, very excited about that. That was my goal. I want to reach out as far as I can, to as many as I can.

Q “Tricks Of The Trade” was a hot album to follow up behind. How are people responding to the new album “THE ADAHLCALYPSE?”

A The response has been amazing, the album surprised people. Alot were expecting me to keep the same formula as the debut album, but I wanted to take a turn. Doing the same thing twice would be too easy. I have so much in my arsenal, I really wanted to stretch my musical muscle this time and pull more out. And "The Adahlcalypse" was the result. It blew the dahls away, and that's what I wanted. Don't get me wrong, some had to adjust, and some preferred the debut altogether, but for the most part I got the response I expected and hoped for.

Q What are your favorite songs to perform?

A "Exposure". I really get into it, because I can totally relate. But "Tomahawk" is another favorite, so energetic! I love doing my karate kicks and punches during the breakdowns. Ha!

Q How does your family feel about your music? Are they supportive?

A VERY supportive. They are all certified dahls. And I can tell they don't just enjoy it because I'm their brother/nephew/cousin, but they honestly love the music, and it gets them moving and so excited. My family is amazed and proud when they see all the hype, YouTube vids, fan signs, everything. And now they're estatic about the new video. They know me simply as "Junior" (lol) but have nothing but high hopes and love for Ken Dahl.

Q Do you have a boyfriend?

A No, I have to stay focused, guys throw me completely off track. I'm a Cancer, I'm very emotional. So its either a relationship or Ken Dahl. Because its no way I can do both. Ken's the #1 man in my life right now. And its going to be that way for a long, long time.

Q Favorite song?

A "Sweet Nothings" by Brandy. That song takes me to another world. There is nothing like it.

Q When Ken Dahl is not in the studio working on music or promoting his albums, what does he like to do with his spare time? What are some of the things you like to do?

A Honestly when I'm not doing my own music, I'm listening to music. Music is really my life. Everywhere I go I'm singing, thinking about music, artists, etc. It consumes me.

Q How do you remain grounded, with all the attention you are receiving now? I know you talk to me on a daily basic. I really admire the fact, that you are so down to earth, and have not got big headed like some folks become once they get to a certain level. A lot of people want others to support their talents, but forget how important it is to at least reach back to others with a thank you here and there.

A There's a reason I don't call any of my supporters "fans". That's so impersonal to me. I call them "dahls" because they are so beautiful to me. Ken Dahl brought me these amazing people who love and cherish me, people like you who don't just see me as another upcoming artist. They see something special in me. Things that I don't see sometimes even in myself. These aren't fans to me. These are my beautiful dahls, they are beside me, they are with me, I love them so much with all my heart. I've been through alot, seen and heard alot, but never love like this. I LOVE to interact and get to know any dahl, it brightens my day to talk to you guys -- which is why I LOVE Twitter. I don't feel distant from you anymore. I'm getting teary eyed just thinking about it.

Q Do you hope to get a major record deal soon, or do you plan to create your own label?

A I plan on starting my own label in the near future.

Q Has anyone reached out to you from the music business, about your music? If so, who, and what they say?

A Yes, a few people in the industry. My most precious dahl being Candice Nelson, part of the The Clutch, she's written so many of my favorite songs, "My Love" by Ciara, "Focus" by Brandy, "Brave" by J-Lo -- she's amazing. She was a supporter before, but "The Adahlcalypse" seems to completely won her over. She's a dahl! Very proud to say that. She tells me all the time how much I inspire her. It's amazing to have people that you look upto, look upto you. It's crazy.

Q I don’t know if you know this, but I’m your biggest fan. I truly love your work, and I’m so proud of you. I know you get these type of comments everyday. How does that make you feel?

A Awww. Thanks boo. And comments like this inspire me to keep going! It would be selfish of me to stop now knowing that people look forward to me continuing what I'm doing! I feel honored to even have that anticipation. Very humbling.

Q Do you plan on getting on the road to promote your new album?

A YES! Already in talks for a few huge events, once I'm done wrapping up these videos, its to the road I go! I want to hit every club possible, I have way too much club friendly material now not to be in a club promoting.

Q Do you have any up coming projects?

A YES! Beside the "Walk The Plank" vid shoot on Jan 30th, Garlic Bread and I were just talking about another album later this year. I'll reveal this to you only, but we're taking it back to the roots of Ken Dahl, "Tricks of The Trade" style. Of course with a new twist.

Q If you could give one piece of advice to anyone following a dream what would it be?

A Just keep pursuing it, if you know that you're meant to do something, don't let anything stop you or get in your way. It sounds very cliche, but its no coincidence that the most successful people happen to be the hardest workers and the most ambitious. And most confident. So many times I talk to people who tell me they are afraid of this, and unsure of that, just do it. Don't let anyone hold you back, but most importantly don't let yourself hold you back from your own dream.
